Artsy Insects

I like the shot above because it kind of looks like a cool book cover or a poster for a sci-fi movie about flies taking over the world.

I have several pics of some bugs we saw in Muskoka (Peninsula Lake, to be specific), and decided to start you all off lightly with a couple more artistic, soft photos. We will get to the creepier, crawlier ones, to be sure.

Below is a bee who hung out on a leaf long enough for me to snap a frame or two. I like the soft focus and prismatic colors on the wings.

{CORRECTION: The insect below actually appears to be a type of hoverfly, likely a female Sphaerophoria scripta}

Back to Say Hi

Seriously, what happened to me!?!?

I realize that the three of you who used to check this site regularly have probably left never to return. At least, you are standing with your back to me, pretending I'm not, uh, posting.

And you have a right to be mad at me. I too have disappointed me. And not for the first time.

So, here are some flowers to make up for the time we've been apart. Please rip them to pieces dramatically and throw them to the floor. But first consider how cool they look. This was shot by removing my 50mm lens from the camera body, and holding it out away from the camera, and tilting a little for some distortion. What results is something like a heavily distorted macro photo.

I've decided to explore ideas that stretch my imagination in photography... the above being one of them. I kind of like the touch that making an imperfect photo brings to the observer. Digital photos are engineered to be perfect, and so I will start creating imperfect photos so counter. Why should I do what anybody else can do, and is doing?

China Beach

Another abstract image from the Christmas tree which reminds me of the imagery of the far east. Either Vietnam era tropical trees silhouetted in rising sun, or ancient Chinese bamboo in the sunset.

I made these last several by pulling back with the macro lens and shooting from a greater distance than usual. The lens was out of focal range, but the lights and silhouettes made for some interesting pictures

Rising Sun

A more abstract image of the pine needles against the blur of background christmas twinkly light. This one reminds me of the Japanese flag, and the poster for the movie Empire of the Sun. I've not experimented with the more two-dimensionally abstract side of macro photography before and think I should, after playing around a bit with images like this.

Fake Plastic Trees

More of the oddly plastic-looking up close pine needles.
